Cross browser compatibility is talk of online world, before we discuss how you can make your website cross browser compatible; it is essential to know its meaning.  Cross browser compatibility has very less to do with the browser. It is less about the look and feel of a website and is more about the features and functions of it.

What does compatibility means then?

The website designer should ensure that the website design works perfect, loads faster and has error free appearance. Well there are a lot more things to a website which can’t be seen visually but makes the website run and work properly. Designing is a difficult aspect of website designing but cross compatibility should always be kept in mind while doing so.

The latest CSS capabilities initiated in the latest CSS3 version do not work with major browsers. Some of the capabilities are in fact not even recognized by CSS.  It is not supported by different browsers but also various versions of same browsers fail to support it. Many people confuse cross browser with multi browser. Multi browsers only work in the environments on which they are tested before. The open or public libraries are multi browsers and list their compatibility and configurations on various browser types.

Here are few ways through which you can make enhance cross browser compatibility of your browser:

List Everything

Specifying everything makes it easy for browsers to read the compatibility and reduces the chances of assumptions.

Valid doc-type

The doc type enables your browser to estimate the codes that your browser will use. If you do not list them clearly then it may guess it differently. A strict doc type assigns a better behavior to a browser.

Validating CSS and HTML

Everything can’t be made perfect on your site but validation gets you a good feedback. Knowing rules and boundaries will assist you in knowing what you are doing and also provides legitimate weapons for agreeing or disagreeing. Validating checks on loop holes and things that you have missed like closing a paragraph tag. Validating helps in catching up and takes care of ambiguity.

Using Web standards

It should only be used when you are failing in other browsers, otherwise one must avoid browser specific standards.

CSS Reset

Most of the browsers assume baseline CSS rules. It is essential that your website works fine with all the browsers thus eliminating the differences will work in your favor.

Testing the website in multiple browsers is also essential. Check it in all browsers except Internet explorer. Work with it in last. Most of the browsers will behave in similar fashion but IE. So checking compatibility with other browsers first is important. If necessary you can apply IE hacks to make it browser friendly for IE users.

It is essential that you apply methods and strategies that will make your website multi browser friendly so that you can enjoy more viewers and customers.
